Share an idea or two from this week's reading. What was most interesting to you? What was most strange? How does the reading this week fit into issues and discussions we have had in this class?
I found Reagan's 1980 Neshoba County Fair Speech (transcript) the most interesting reading of this week. He managed to communicate on an oddly personal level to the attendees of the Fair. His audience was seemingly predominantly Republican. He managed to make himself vulnerable and more of a person, rather than a politician, by proclaiming his previous political affiliations. He also managed to gingerly touch on the shortcomings of President Carter. All in all, I found the delivery of his message to be the most interesting reading of the week.
What I found most interesting from this week’s reading was the transcript of Ronald Reagan's 1980, Neshoba County Fair speech. His speech consisted of a promise to "restore to states and local governments the power that properly belongs to them." I found it interesting that Ronald Reagan acknowledged the problems that faced his country, such as extremely high unemployment rates, and discussed them with the public. Transparency has been a topic discussed in class, for instance in The Crédit Mobilier scandal of 1867, and has been an issue present between authority figures and general population throughout the course of history and still remains an issue today.
I found Ronald Reagan's Neshoba County Fair speech to be very interesting. I enjoyed how Reagan tried to resonate with the audience on a personal level before getting to the subject of his speech. I found it interesting that Reagan addressed the problems during Carter's presidency and how he could not change the things he said he was going to change. Reagan used this to promote himself and say that he would not make the same mistakes. One of the reasons I chose this speech was because Reagan surrounded his main topic with slight banter to try and connect with the audience.
What I found most interesting from this week's reading was the Farewell Address given by Ronald Reagan. The speech marks the end of his presidency and it highlights some of his major achievement like pulling the encononmy out of the recession. What I found the most intruging was the anticdote he shared about the American navy officers being called Freedom men. In his speech Reagan talked about how American may have strayed from in original values of freedom but it is interesting that despite that people still viewed American as the home of the free. For the countries entire existance it struggled to define the boundaries of freedom. Yet despite those those struggles the country was still viewed as the ideal by other nations.
"Ronald Reagan's 1980, Neshoba County Fair speech" was most interesting to me because I like dhow he opened his speech up with one of his personal non-political experiences to connect with the audience. I found it interesting how Reagan expressed how he felt about the unemployment rate and military pay and benefits in the United states. He basically expressed how to make America great everyone must come together to make a change.
In Ronald Reagan's Farewell Address he concludes the address by telling America that, "We did it". Reagan is telling America look what we did, we made the country stronger, freer, and left her in amazing hands. Reagan was proud of the way we came together as a whole and brought America back again. To where it should be and should always be. Reagan knows that he did not fix everything, but he made a lot of changes that will help America shape back to where it should of always been. Reagan is proud of his eight years of being a president, and he is hoping that he started fixing America and helping it get into shape and that every president after him should help and try to keep America on the top. And to keep America on top all you have to do is let everyone come together to make changes and make it great.
"Ronald Reagan's 1980 Neshoba County Fair Speech" interested me the most. He said that the government had said that they were going to decrease inflation and unemployment, but they had not kept their word. He also talked about how he believed in states' rights. He said that there were some things that the federal government was given that they were not given under the Constitution. He said that some of the things that the federal government had control over should really be controlled by the state governments. I think this is still somewhat true in our country today.
I found something in "Ronald Reagan's 1980 Neshoba County Fair Speech" that grabbed my attention. He said that the administration “was going to reduce inflation to less than four percent and reduce unemployment to less than four percent.” This did not happen and he accused them of betraying the people. To me not only were they betrayed by the administration but by themselves. They should not have believed his unfound claim because as unemployment decreases, more money comes into circulation, which in turn raises demand for goods. This increase in demand causes prices to rise, thus increasing inflation. The administration should not have made these claims and the people should not have been so gullible to believe it.
The reading I found most interesting this week was “Ronald Reagan’s 1980 Neshoba County Fair Speech” I found this reading the most interesting because I thought it was a very eye opening and though tout speech. Reagan talks about how much of an honor it was to be president for eight years. I found it very interesting when Reagan said “we’d have to become strong again after years of weakness and confusion” and he claims that they did that and soon toasted to new peace around the world.
Ronald Reagan's Farewell Address to The Nation was interesting reading to me. In this speech, he says his goodbyes to the American people and everything that he is proud of. As he was president, there were many economic problems that he had to overcome and he was very proud of the American people for making it through those hard times that were faced while he was president. He also talked frequently about his past and his success so that he could fully engrave his legacy into the American people. His speech continuously talks about national pride and freedom, which grabbed the attention of many people and which made the conservative people of that time idolize him even more.
Jimmy Carter's Address to the Nation on Energy and National Goals "The Malaise Speech" was the most interesting read for me this week. It was interesting to see how the energy crisis in America with regards to the Middle East was as important of a topic in the past as it is today. This reading fits into the discussions we have in class at the moment because we are currently talking about the energy crisis in America and the solutions and responses we made and brought up to try and fix it.
Ronald Reagan's "1980 Neshoba County Fair Speech" was most interesting to be because of how he presented the speech to his audience. By talking about football and his former political affiliation, he was able to connect to his audience on a more personal level and made himself more relatable. He also took a few jabs towards Jimmy Carter while also addressing the current problems occurring in the States. I admired how honest he was with the crowd and how he made sure to explain the crises in a more understandable way. Reagan was devoted to readjusting our priorities and restoring power to states and local communities. I especially liked how he acknowledged the willingness of the people to made sacrifices and how much hope he had for the future of the United States.
I found the "Transcript of Ronald Reagan's 1980 Neshoba County Fair speech". In this speech, Reagan describes the issues that he sees occurring in the country and how these issues are occurring because of the current administration. He is very terse with the issues and the reasons for their occurrence as seen when he says, " ...they took office that it was going to reduce inflation to less than four percent and reduce unemployment to less than four percent, has betrayed the people with an inflation rate that they hope that they might get back down to 10 percent." This quote shows how Reagan believed that he could fix the problems of the past administration. This also shows that Reagan's goal was to connect to his audience and not what his opponent's would want.
In Ronald Reagan's speech at the Neshoba County Fair, he goes into his speech by engaging and relating to the audience. Reagan takes a more in-formal and relaxed approach to this speech. Before he gets into serious matters and issues, Reagan starts off by relating to the audience, engaging them, and speaking of his experiences. Reagan talks about Ole Miss. vs. Tennessee which gets the audience's attention. Reagan then leads on into what he really wants to talk about. This is a smart move by Reagan to understand his audience's demographic and use it to his advantage.
In Ronald Reagan's farewell address, I found it interesting how much he reminisced on the great times he had in his presidency before departing. He made the speech feel like he was talking to all of America personally rather than formally. He talked about how much he would miss the view he had from the White House and how he looked back on the 8 years he served with happiness. I loved how he talked about how he felt in his presidency and how he felt as though he was doing a service that he would miss dearly. He spoke of the nations freedom and how it was an honor for him to serve as the head of the nation for the amount of time he did. it felt as though he truly cared about the people he saw over and the nation he worked in.
The reading that I found most interesting for this week was "The Malaise Speech". I really liked how he started off the speech saying what he had promised the people a president who would feel what they are going through a person who was apart of them and not just in charge of them. He answers the question of the people right away and puts his self in the place of the people. He also noticed that the problem with the Nation are much deeper than the energy shortage they have. Although he didn't want to talk to the American people about the energy shortage he wanted to talk about the threat to American Democracy. He says how whats happening is deeper than anything that could be going around during that time.
